The sanctuary is located on the shores of Vembanad Lake in the enchanting backwaters of Kerala, hence it is also known as the Vembanad Bird Sanctuary. History of the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

The Place of the Bird Sanctuary was formerly known as Bakers Estate after Alfred George Baker who developed the wetlands of Lake Vembanad into fertile land. It was the time of 1847.  Now, this place is known as Kumarakom Village. Besides the Kavanagh River, Alfred George Baker has planted many Mangrove Trees and from a number of migratory and Native birds took over the area. Probably, that’s why Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary became the first scientifically formed and preserved bird sanctuary in India

  • By Air: Cochin International Airport is the nearest Airpot of the Sanctuary. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is 76.5 km from Cochin International Airport via NH 66. From the airport, it takes about 1 hour 40 minutes to reach the sanctuary by Taxi or Bus.
