Overview of Patna Bird Sanctuary

Patna Bird Sanctuary (Patna Wildlife Sanctuary) is located about 6 km from Jalesar town in the Etah district on the Jalesar road, Uttar Pradesh. Covered 108 hectares area, the Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary is built and declared in 1991 under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, (Rahmani and Daniel 1997). Inside the Bird Sanctuary, there is a common rainfed Wetland with a Natural Freshwater area of only 1 km2.

There are about 300 Different species of birds found in the Patna Bird Sanctuary. In Winter, The lake inside the sanctuary has plenty of water due to heavy rainfall which is becoming very attractive for Birds.  Due to this, the arrival of guest birds from the beginning has enhanced the beauty of the lake. The shallow parts of the Patna Bird Sanctuary dry up in summer, leaving some reservoirs in the deeper areas. This sanctuary will be a very good example of how this sanctuary and wetland could become one of the best wetland habitats in the country within a few years of conservation.

Some of the commonly found birds in the Sanctuary are cotton teal from Siberia, gadwall, grayleg goose, coot, common teal, whistling teal, spoonville birds from China, Comb Duck, Ruddy Shelduck, Indian Spot-billed Duck, Northern Pintail, and many more Native Birds. At the end of April, the availability of Richness and Diversity of Waterbirds is highest.

Apart from these commonly found Native Birds, there are many migratory has been shown in the Sanctuary in the December to March Season. The entire lake area is covered by the abundant growth of macrophytic plants of water hyacinth and potamojetan sp. According to the record of Patna Bird Sanctuary, there are 106+ species of the resident and Migratory Birds are shown sounding the lake.

 These are the Red Crested Pochard, War Headed Goose, Tufted Pochard, Nilsar, and many more. The number of all these migratory birds is about 20 thousand. While about 16 thousand birds of many species of the country have come.

As we already know in the upper part of the article, there’s a Wetlands inside the Bird Sanctuary. People love to visit the sounding the Wetlands to see the birds. There is cultivation is done near the waterbody, so, that Bird easily gets food.

  • By Train: Jaleasar Railway Station is the nearest railway station to the Patna Bird Sanctuary, in Etah. You can reach the Etah District by train route to visit the Patna Bird Sanctuary.
