About Koonthankulam Bird Sanctuary

Kunthankulam Bird Sanctuary is located in Koonthankulam village in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu. In 1994, this area declared a Sanctuary which is covered around 1.2933 km2.  It consists of Kunthankulam and Kadankulam irrigation tanks, which are conveniently connected by road. 

This Busy Town is located on the Banks of the Tambaraparani River which is just 38 km from Tirunelveli. Kunthankulam Bird Sanctuary is one of the largest Water Bird Breeding Reserves in South India.

Mythological History of the Place

According to mythology, a Bedasharma, an ardent devotee of Shiva, on his pilgrimage from north to south, was invited by Lord Shiva to his abode on the banks of the holy river in his dream. Delighted devotees came to ‘Sindupundhurai’ on the banks of the river and stayed with their families. Once there was a famine that forced Bedasharma to beg and collect rice by praying daily. One day he spread rice under the sun to dry before the Lord and went to perform ablution at Tamiraparani.
