Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Overview

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is also known as Keoladeo National Park. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is located in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. UNESCO has listed the sanctuary in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The sanctuary is home to 366 bird species, 379 flower species, wildlife, and many more trees. Locally, this 23 km bird and wildlife reserve is known as Ghana and is a mosaic of dry grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands.

Every winter season, thousands of migratory waterfowl visit this area for breeding. Bharatpur National park is one of the richest bird areas in the world. This Sanctuary was once a waterfowl hunting ground for the British. Then, in 1971 it was converted into a sanctuary for birds and other wildlife. History of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary or Keoladeo National Park

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in India. This Sanctuary has existed for nearly 250 years and was once used as a hunting ground by the Maharajahs in the late 1850s. Basically, in this area there was a duck shoot was held in honor of the British Viceroy, and this area was used for hunting. But, In 1976, the area was declared a bird sanctuary and  On 10 March 1982, it was made a national park. In the time of British India,  In 1938, the governor General of India, Lord Linlithgrow was killed over 4273 birds, including mallards and teals. After the independence of India, the entire forest came under the Rajasthan Forest Act 1953, in 1982,  which displeased the local farmers and caused many problems between them and the government. It was designated a World Heritage Site in December 1985.

Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary is an amazing oasis of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of Agra and Jaipur. The forest of Bharatpur Sanctuary is a semi-arid biotype with significant vegetation and hence the sanctuary is called ‘Ghana-Ghani’. There are many dry deciduous medium-sized trees and shrubs available. In the north part of the Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary, the forest of the sanctuary is include Kadam, Jamun, and babul trees.

 The open forest is mostly babul and also small amounts of Kandi Tree. The park’s aquatic vegetation is rich and sufficient for the food needs of waterfowl. The scrubland is dominated by bers and capris. Pilu is practically the only woody plant found in saline soil regions. Aquatic vegetation is rich and provides a valuable food source for waterfowl.
